B’nai Mitzvah Journey – Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah Preparation

OJL works closely with students and their families from the first day of learning to the “big day!”

We view Bar Mitzvah prepartion and Bat Mitzvah prepartion as a journey which should be a meaningful and enjoyable experience. Our comprehensive program is tailored to meet the unique learning needs and educational goals of each student. OJL’s skilled educators go above and beyond standard preparation to ensure students are ready for the big day and are able to experience the ceremony with the confidence and pride that we believe should be an inherent part of this milestone.

After an initial assessment, our educators will develop a curriculum and timeline, tailored to the student and their family. Students enrolled in both our traditional (1-1.5 years) and accelerated (6-9 months) B’nai Mitzvah programs typically learn:

  • Torah and Haftarah tropes (melodies)
  • Torah portion and prayers
  • Elements of the service
  • Write a D’var Torah (traditional speech focused on the weekly Torah portion).

No two b’nai mitzvah are the same, and creating personal and positive experiences for all OJL students and their families are among our top priorities. We work closely with families to: determine the service that would be best (e.g., Shabbat morning, weekday, mincha/havdallah); determine the parts of the service with which the student would like to participate (e.g., morning prayers, special blessings); plan the ceremony; and develop an achievable timeline.

We recognize that preparing to become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah can be daunting both for students and their families. From the very first day of learning to the “big day,” we guide our students and their families through the B’nai Mitzvah journey to ensure they are well-prepared. Our team is always available to answer questions.
